Bye Bye Portal
I am on a mission to investigate the how to and who to regarding a BCU app.
If we are to be the school of iPads – it only makes sense.
I’ve checked out of few – some are impressive.
Like Northwestern College App (NWC Alumni Crib Sheet): nice features including job search, college news, auto, etiquette, health (some of it looks purchased/canned).
For current students I like ‘inside strose’ (College of Saint Rose).
Another user friendly and packed with info app is iNKU. It includes a GPA calculator, “my” classes, “my” grades, an academic calendar, quick link to social medias, news, an incon link to refill meal cards, bus schedules, athletics, trivia and more. What seems to be missing is a list/calendar of campus activities. (Their Student Development folks must be asleep.)
Bye Bye PORTAL!

I’d love to offer a class on creating iPad apps. I have a student right now who is trying to learn how to create an Android app.
One problem: Last time I checked, iPad apps are developed on Macs only. Get some Macs for CSCI students (and faculty) and we can probably do something.

Tom you can use the IMC for class. We can work on scheduling a time. Having the class in there may help your argument for a Mac on your desk!

Tom,
Let’s just ASK for Macs for the CS Department!

I wonder if it might be better for our students to learn how to make web apps instead of specific platform apps. Coding with HTML5 and CSS3 can be done on any computer, can be very interactive, and can then be used on any platform by the end users. I think having experience with HTML5 and CSS3 might get the students farther than just Apple iOS, too.

Nancy, you were right – the NWC app is created by this company: http://www.capandcompass.com/ and the St Rose app is from this company: http://www.futuremediainteractive.com/
Looks like iNKU was actually developed by the campus IT: http://www.nku.edu/display_news.php?ID=3892
